L. Steven Platt is a veteran attorney with more than 40 years of experience concentrating in representing businesses in the areas of labor and employment law and commercial litigation in state and federal courts. He counsels clients on all employment issues, including union issues, grievances, non-compete litigation, arbitration, hiring, discipline, termination, handbooks, policy, equal employment opportunity, and training.
In addition to being licensed in Illinois, Steve is admitted to practice before various courts throughout the country and has handled labor and employment cases in multiple states and jurisdictions. He has been involved in 12 United States Supreme Court cases involving employment matters, has argued before the Illinois and federal appellate courts, the Illinois Supreme Court and before several federal appellate courts outside of Illinois.
Steve has won a major victory in a case before the Chief Judge of the Illinois Human Rights Commission, in the Cook County Chancery Court, and recently won a $1.5 million dollar verdict while beating a $16 million counter-claim in a construction case for a large construction subcontractor in the Commercial Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
As a highly skilled practitioner, Steve is the author of Chapter 11: Workplace and Family Leave Issues for the IICLE Employment Termination Handbook, 2018 Edition. He also has assisted in writing the EEOC’s guidelines on employment harassment and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals (Chicago Federal Courts) Jury Instructions on sex discrimination and harassment, and helped write the regulations to the Older Workers Benefit Protection Act. Steve was the long-time co-author of an age discrimination litigation book for James Publishing whose co-author was the first deputy assistant to the EEOC chair and has published and lectured extensively throughout his career.
Steve has given a myriad of training sessions to major companies in key areas, including sexual harassment, enforcement of work rules, privacy issues, discipline and discharge, and avoiding workplace discrimination. In those subject areas, he is a lecturer for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Education, the National Employment Lawyers Association, and other large groups.
Steve has been ranked as one of the top seven labor and employment lawyers in the City of Chicago by Chambers and Partners, Ltd., and one of the top 100 employment lawyers in the State of Illinois. In recent years, he also has been rated “5” out of “5” by his peers for excellence and integrity in the practice of law, and given a “5” out of “5” by clients in the same survey conducted by Martindale Hubbell. Steve is also a “Fellow” in the American College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
Steve has been featured on a CBS News’ “Eye on America,” and has been quoted in the NY Times, U.S. News & World Report, US Today, AARP publications as well as in local newspapers.
- Represented several local manufacturing clients on all labor and employment matters, collective bargaining, employment related disputes and training, civil rights issues, and preventative training and set-up to avoid litigation and charges and limit liability in the event of litigation and charges.
- Counseled in litigation for and against clients in the area of non-competes and violation of confidentiality agreements, trade secrets, and injunctions.
- Represented a municipal authority as counsel on all civil rights and employment related matters. Counseled on disciplinary issues, progressive discipline, terminations, response to threats of employment related litigation, charges of discrimination filed with state, local and federal agencies, and employment litigation. Also, advised on employment related matters such as union issues, grievances, and wage and hour issues.
